Mielie craft project

Guest blogger Sarah Barnhoorn of Babazeka writes about Mielie's handmade products.

Mielie is a socially responsible craft project which is based in Cape Town. It has always been one of my favourites, but unfortunately Babazeka does not stock the Mielie products because the project has its own online shop. This website is definitely worth having a browse through, and the Mielie blog is also definitely worth reading.

The good that the project's founder, Adri Schultz, is doing in Cape Town really inspired me. Not only is the business creating jobs and improving lives, the products are also of a world-class standard.

What I really enjoy about the Mielie products is their originality. The technique used to create each bag, purse or cushion is the knotting of old rags. The finished effect is similar to the kernels of a mealie - hence the name! They're also known for their bright colours and beautiful patterns.
